Col de Claran: hike, panorama and access from Le Collet

At an altitude of 1,956 metres, the Col de Claran is one of the most emblematic viewpoints in the Belledonne massif, accessible from the resort of Le Collet d’Allevard. After a few hours’ walk through the mountain pastures, hikers are rewarded with an exceptional panorama of the Vercors, Chartreuse and Bauges ranges and their iconic peaks. In fine weather, Mont-Blanc is revealed in all its majesty.

A pass accessible to all abilities

Overlooked by the Petit and Grand Charnier peaks, the Col de Claran is reached after a gradual ascent through the mountain pastures. The route from the bottom of the Collet station is suitable for intermediate hikers. Once on the pass, you can reach the Pierre du Carre chalet or descend directly to Super Collet and Le Collet. The pass also has its own mountain pasture chalet.

In summer, the Claran chairlift provides effortless access to the pass, making the experience accessible to a wider public.

Ideas for circular walks from Le Collet

The Col de Claran is an essential stop-off point on a number of hiking routes starting from Le Collet. Here are two popular routes:

  • Boucle des Plagnes – Sentier 2000 – Col de Claran: starting from the Super Collet, this 7km loop passes over the Col de l’Occiput, skirts the Sentier 2000 before reaching the Col de Claran.
  • Le Grand Charnier via the Arête de l’Évêque: from Le Collet, this hike to the summit of the Grand Charnier is an easy way to reach the Col de Claran via the Arête de l’Évêque.
